How to clean your accordion storm shutters

Accordion storm shutters are important because they can help protect your home or place of employment from dangerous winds. Cleaning them takes a little while, but it’s well worth the inconvenience. Clean shutters could mean the difference between a place protected and thousands of dollars of damage to your property.

Here’s how to clean the shutters and keep your house safe!

Step-1

Make sure you clear dirt off the shutter tracks and from the locking mechanism. One of the best tools you can actually use for this task – believe it or not – are pipe cleaners. From there you can simply wipe down the lock and tracks with a wet cloth and then wipe them with a dry, second cloth.

Step-2

Take about a cup of dishwashing detergent and mix it with 4 gallons of water. Use that to clean the whole expanse of your shutters. Simply close them so you don’t miss small nooks and crannies. Make sure you cover both the inside and outside.

Step-3

Work your way from the top of the shutters all the way to the bottom. Once you’ve covered the entire surface, let it simply sit for 5-10 minutes so that any grime that may be on the shutters loosens up so it can be cleaned easier. Repeat this for both sides and when you’re done letting the shutter stand, you can grab some clean water and start rinsing.

Step-4

When you’re done cleaning off the outside of the shutters, it’s time to move into the house and do the inside. Make sure you clean top to bottom again, and repeat the same process as you did with the outside of the shutters. The only real difference is how you rinse. Obviously you don’t have the luxury of a garden hose like you would with the outside part. Simply use a bucket of clean water and rub the shutters down and dry it off with a clean, cotton cloth.
