Replacing windows is not necessarily something we want to do as it can be costly. While you will definitely save some money up-front, you will need to keep in mind that you’ll need to make a few investments and one of the first ones will likely be in the windows. If you have purchased an older mobile home, here are some things you might run into when you go to replace its windows. Let’s jump right in!
Window sizing issues
Mobile homes by nature – are (and were) designed to save space. Many of the original window openings may match today’s more modern, standard window sizes. Because of this, you’ll need to make sure you take your measurements early and even take into consideration the fact that you may have to enlarge the openings to accommodate the windows you’d like to purchase.
Be mindful of…
When exploring the overall size of the window openings be mindful that any additional opening that you’ll have to carve out can actually be carved out. Make sure any of the enlarging of spaces is not interfering with any critical structural elements like load bearing walls, electrical wiring or plumbing lines.
The good news here is some of these things may be re-done – particularly the wiring and plumbing, but remember – this will add to the cost of the project. If you are insistent about messing around with a load bearing wall, you’ll need to call an engineer to help with your project.
Depth issues
The next issue you’ll contend with is the overall depth of your walls relative to the window models you want to use. Keep in mind that even today – mobile homes have walls with significantly less depth than walls in a traditional home, so sill depth may have to be increased anytime you consider adding new windows.
