Are you getting what you’re paying for with your window replacement?

Window replacement tips – let’s dive in on this one. One of the most common questions we get is how long our customers can expect their replacement windows to last. And honestly – it’s  a really important question to ask! Window replacement is one of the most common and sometimes costly investments that a homeowner can make and it’s important to make sure you’re ultimately getting the best bang for your buck.

Today, we’re going to go over some of the most common window types and what you can expect in terms of their longevity. Let’s jump right in!

Wood windows

Wood windows are an excellent classic addition to make to your home. They look great and there’s just something about the craftsmanship that goes into them that make them stick out more than other types of windows. However, they do tend to be at a little bit higher risk for issues.

Over time, wood windows can rot, warp and splinter and are also vulnerable to termites. They need regular maintenance and will need routine sanding, staining and painting. So like we said – the extra aesthetic appeal can come with a price in terms of both money, time and maintenance. They also don’t really last as long as other types of windows – typically getting you through about 15 to 20 years depending on the quality of the work.

Aluminum windows

Aluminum windows are significantly stronger than wood windows and certainly more resistant to the elements. However they’re not without their vulnerabilities. Aluminum windows can get damaged and accumulate dents. If you’re in a climate like ours here in Tampa, FL – hurricanes and harsh weather can certainly have a significant impact. They can also corrode if they’re not treated properly, so you’ll want to make sure you’re getting them looked at once a year. Overall though, you’ll get more length out of your aluminum windows – which will last typically around 20-25 years.

Fiberglass windows

Fiberglass windows are kinda the Rolls Royce of windows. They can take an absolute beating, they last long, look great but the downside is that, well – they cost A LOT. Significantly more, in fact – than the other two options. But like we said – the old saying goes ‘you get what you pay for’ and fiberglass windows last forever. Like 50 years – which is almost twice as much as Aluminum Windows. Particularly if you just want to install windows and forget they exist for the rest of your life, this might be the best option, especially if you’re in your forever home. These days however – fiberglass windows aren’t just a matter of wanting them – it’s a matter of getting them. With supply chains backed up, they’re difficult to find, making them even more expensive than they’d normally be – so just be aware of that.

All in all – your return on investment comes down to what you ultimately want to get out of your windows.
