Colonial shutters are some of the most popular forms of hurricane shutters on the market and a great choice for a homeowner who wants some charm blended with good, old-fashioned dependability.
Here’s what you need to know about Colonial Hurricane Shutters and whether they’re the right kind of shutter for your home. Let’s jump right in.
What are they?
Unlike a lot of shutters we’ve talked about on this blog in the past, Colonial shutters became popular up in the northeast, not in the Caribbean. They come in a variety of configurations but the most popular are wedge shaped, with the thick portion towards the front and a ridge that runs the length of the louver. Each shutter works independent of the other and if the window is large enough, they can be used in a two-tier configuration.
The good
Colonial shutters are popular largely for their aesthetic and can be painted or stained to match furniture of the exterior of any home – making them a versatile option for homeowners. But don’t let their good looks fool you; colonial hurricane shutters score high on the practicality scale, too – offering excellent security and safety from storms in addition to providing a high level of privacy and light control when in the closed position.
The bad
Overall these shutters are a great option but they do come with a few drawbacks depending on your needs. The first slight drawback is that they’re not particularly great at insulating cold and warm air in your home. They also don’t do a great job controlling sound, either – so if you’re noisy or are looking to suppress noise outside the home, colonial shutters aren’t the best option.
Also, you’ll need to consider spacing on the outside of your home and whether or not you have enough surface area to install the shutters. They do tend to take up a lot of space.
And finally, if your budget is a significant concern, colonial shutters might not be for you. While they’re certainly not expensive and represent a tremendous value for their price point – they’re not cheap. So if you’re working on a shoestring budget, you’ll likely be priced out.
